Stress and your Gut.
Do you suffer from Stress in your daily life? Does this effect your Gut? Many clients come to me with IBS and stress related ailments. The good news is you don’t have to live with these conditions. There are practical easy ways to cope and deal with stress in your life.
When we’re stressed, our brain activates the sympathetic nervous system. The sympathetic nervous system is our flight-or-fight response: it prepares the body to protect itself against imminent danger by conserving functions that aren’t immediately needed for survival. That includes digestion. The emptying of the stomach is delayed, which can lead to a stomachache, indigestion, heartburn and nausea.
Thoughts and emotions triggered by stress can have an effect on your stomach and bowels. The reverse can also occur. What goes on in your gut can cause stress and long-term upset.
One of the keys to better digestion is regular stress management. Reducing stress can lower inflammation in the gut, ease gastrointestinal issues (GI), and keep you grounded, since your body can focus on absorbing the nutrients you need. A good diet also plays a role, what we eat can affect the gut.
“Poor gut health doesn’t always show up in the form of digestive symptoms and discomfort. It can basically be anything from allergies, autoimmunity and skin issues – right down to just feeling unhappy and overwhelm. When your gut health is transformed your brain is so thankful – mood, memory and concentration often improve. 80% of your immune system resides in your gastrointestinal tract.” –Caroline Seale Nutritional Therapist Functional Medicine Practitioner Ireland BA (Hons), DipNT, mNTOI, rCNHC
The Relaxation Response is your body’s natural antidote to the Stress Response. By activating the parasympathetic system we restore balance and equilibrium to the body-mind system. There are many ways to activate your relaxation response, Hypnosis, Mindfulness and Meditation are excellent tools. Tapping into your creativity allows the mind to shift it’s focus away from stressful thoughts. Hypnotherapy can have a positive impact on your ability to cope with stress, removing old stressors from the mind and giving you the tools to manage stress and your life in a positive way.
With your gut in mind I have teamed up with Nutritional Therapist Caroline Seale who runs a super 6 weeks course Gut Transformation Course. Starting Thursday 2nd March 2023.
